Get Served: Diary of a Hospitality Worker

Dear Diary: Opinions please!

I read this article over on WAtoday last week and I would like your opinions on it please.

Me? I thought it was the stupidest thing I have ever read (exaggeration for effect). Really? Oh how dare we stop serving breakfast at 11.30am and not let you ignore the menu and order whatever the hell you want. What horrible oppressive folk we are!

*warning mini rant ahead*

While I am on the subject of breakfast let me tell you something that annoys me greatly. If the menu says “poached eggs with tomato, toast and bacon” and you say to me “I’ll have two poached eggs and bacon” whilst pointing to said menu item, I will assume you mean two serves of the meal, not two actual eggs. You don’t dictate how many eggs you get. The menu does. That is why it says “eggs” and not “egg”. If you are confused you can try saying “how many eggs do you get?”. Are we clear? Wonderful!

Love Carrie xoxo xxxx

  1. Aaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! While I agree people should not alter their order from what’s on the menu and if it’s not all-day breakfast diners should go somewhere else blah blah blah you need to stop assuming the general public know as much about the industry as you do. If it says ‘poached eggs’ how is a diner meant to know if that means 2, 6 or 300? What’s the difference in asking for two eggs rather than saying how many is it?

  2. It just annoys me. I admit, it’s actually not a big deal so long as you check to make sure whether they mean two eggs or two serves of eggs, which I always do check. Except for this one time when a lady asked for two fruit toasts so I sent her two serves but she only meant two slices. In fairness, she was ordering for herself and her friend so I assumed she wanted one serve each. Never assume!!

Do you know what other completely irrelevant thing annoys me?? The word mugaccino.

  5. Does that mean I can’t order ‘no toast’? Because the bread you guys serve is massive and if I ate it, I wouldn’t be able to eat the rest of the awesome!
I shouldn’t really comment too much on this one because I love the good ole All Day Breakfast… I do agree though that people shouldn’t be able to dictate the menu to the chefs (*insert banana-loving pancake patron story here!*)! If you don’t like the menu, don’t go to the cafe!
People are just stupid sometimes really!

  6. Of course no toast is fine. The way the article is written made it sound to me like she was asking for something completely off menu.

I, of course work in a place that serves all day breakfast and I am not opposed to it. However, I work in a cafĂ© not a restaurant and every venue is entitled to stop breakfast whenever they want. It sounded like she expected everywhere to serve breakfast till whenever it suited her. Which for a lot of places isn’t financially viable and inconvenient.

Exactly, if you do not like what is on offer on the menu then go elsewhere, I will never forget the lady who asked me at Mojo’s “I know it’s not written on the menu, but do you do carbonara?”
